Description:

Foulis Press edition. Small 4to (19 cm). pp. vi, 425, [1]. Variant title page. This is the single volume issue which included the Greek text only (with Latin commentary). Bound in full period olive morocco with spine gilt in 6 compartments. The binding is age-toned or fading to brown and contains spots of rubbing and wear to the extremities and to the outer joints; some small touch-up repairs are present; the outer corners of the boards are neatly restored. All edges of the book block are gilt. A name is written in an early hand on the front blank fly-leaf – "W. Bishop June 23rd, 1796." Interior pages are clean. …Contains the Greek text for the seven tragedies of Sophocles – Ajax Flagellifer, Electra, Oedipus Tyrannus, Antigone, Oedipus Coloneus, Trachiniae, Philoctetes. In 1745 the Foulis Press also published a two volume octavo edition of Sophocles with both Greek text and Latin translation. According to Dibdin the octavo edition is considered "inaccurate", but this single volume quarto (with Greek text only) is "a very correct edition" [See Dibdin II, p. 412 – in note]. From the collection of American book collector Charles C. Kalbfleisch with his gilt monogram morocco book label located on the inside front cover. The end papers also display an engraved heraldic bookplate - "De la bibliotheque de M. Delisle", and the engraved bookplate of book collector Herbert S. Squance (1867-1922). [Gaskell, Foulis Press, 68; Dibdin II, p. 412; ESTC N479238]. Bookseller Inventory #
