About this Item

8vo. pp. [4], XXXIV, [2], 448. Bound in quarter brown morcco with marbled boards. Top edge gilt. Printed on very poor quality paper. Pages are well tanned and quite brittle. Occasional marginal tears and chipping are present to the interior leaves. The title page contains a tear (very neatly sealed) half way across the page. Jules Michelet (1798-1874) was an important French historian and romantic writer who held the chair of history at the College de France. His "La Sorciere" was first published in French 1862. The work contains a highly romanticized recreation of several witches’ lives. Michelet also writes on the history of witchcraft and of demonic possession. The author argues that the practice of witchcraft was a form of social rebellion against feudal oppression. A number of important witchcraft cases are discussed including those of Louis Gauffridi and the Ursuline Nuns, Urban Grandier and the demoniacs of Loudun; Madeline Bavent and the demoniacs of Louviers.
