About this Item

New York: D. Appleton, 1896. Octavo, hardcover, bound in contemporary half morocco and marbled boards. 448 pages, indexed and illustrated. Covers lightly scuffed, and with some foxing within, but a very good copy overall. John Tyndall (1820-1893) was a British physicist and professor of natural philosophy at the Royal Institution. He was a colleague of Farady, whom he succeeded as scientific advisor to Trinity House and as superintendent of the Royal Institution. His textbook on sound, of which this is the third edition, was translated into many languages. The fact that the great German physicist Helmholtz helped prepare the German edition says a great deal about the validity of the text. Bookseller Inventory # 3033
