Size: 4to. 6-volume set (complete). Text contains minor marks/notes in pencil. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Previous owner's name in ink on front flyleaf of each volume. Six volume set (the original three volumes have been printed as six volumes with each of the three original volumes having two parts which are, however, numbered on the spine Vol. I-VI). Three-quarter leather and black cloth over boards, gilt ruled and lettered on spine, all edges speckled, illustrated with steel engravings with tissues from drawings made expressly for this work by F. O. C. Darley and other eminent American artists; Volume I (Part 1), frontispiece with tissue standing portrait of General Winfield Scott, includes extra engraved illustrated title page with Robert Tomes listed as author, 292 pages; Volume II (Part 2 of the original Vol. I), pages 293-664; Volume III (Part 1 of the original Vol. II), frontispiece portrait of General McClellan, extra illustrated title page vignette of Mobile Bay, 298 pages; Volume IV (Part 2 of original Vol. II), pages 299-680; Volume V (Part 1 of original Vol. III), frontispiece portrait with tissue of US Grant, title page engraved vignette titled Victory, 348 pages; Volume VI (Part 2 of original Vol. III), pages 349-736, pages 703-736 are the Analytical Index which breaks off in the middle of the W's and oddly enough, is continued at the beginning of Volume I (pages 737-738). All volumes have covers scuffed & stained/soiled, light wear at corners and spine ends, offsetting on first few pages from leather at tips of spines, all have x's next to the illustrations in the illustration lists, light to moderate foxing on some tissues, light to moderate foxing in blank margins of illustrations with sometimes a spot or two in the illustration, some of the plates have a couple of damp stains on the fore edges which does not appear on the pages and does not appear on all the plates, Volume VI has a tear on page 735/736 with a spot of paper loss.
