About this Item

Octavo. (xviii), 289 pages. Tan cloth with brown lettering at spine in green, tan and brown decorative dust jacket. Numerous illustrations, fold-out map. Bibliography and index. Mr. Rister tells the story of 'the land of trail herds up from Texas, of home made law and order, and of dust storms and grasshopper plagues, a land which is symbolized by the barbed wire fence, the adobe and sod house, rather than the cabin and split rail fence of older frontiers.' In a chapter entiitled "Frontier Justice" Mr. Rister gives a general picture of lawlessness in the early-day Southwest. (Six-Guns 1864; Herd 1908; Howes R317). Minor foxing inside covers and fore edge otherwise near fine in near very good dust jacket (wear and chipping at corners and spine, chip missing lower front, 2" closed tear, darkening to back cover).
