Frontispiece portraits of Lincoln (Vol. I) and Grant (Vol. II), 47 full-page steel engravings, tissue guards all present, plus double-page colored map of the United States. Half-morocco over cloth boards, corners frayed, title in gilt on covers, spine with 5 raised bands, yellow end-papers, all edges gilt. Stamp of Geo. C. Fisk, Brightwood, on fly-leaves. Overall an excellent copy. Later edition of Volume I and first edition of Volume II. A very readable work encompassing pre-Civil War posturing by the States and their politicians through the end of hostilities. Crafts (1819-1906) spends a great deal of time and effort on Lincoln's cabinet and the military leaders on both sides of the conflict. Bookseller Inventory #

Book Description Samuel Walker & Co. - Boston, 1867. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Two Volumes : 9" x 11 1/2", 652 + 648 pp., folding map at the back of Vol. I and many steel engravings. Three quarter gilt lined calf with maroon cloth, with five raised faux bands and six gilt lined compartments. Gilt lettered titles on spine. Handling wear to all edges and high spots, corners lightly worn through with piece of lower band on Vol. I missing. Random flakes of cloth missing from covers on both volumes. Bindings straight square and secure with hinges solid and supple. Separations beginning at bottom of front side hinges. Interior bright, clean and unmarked save for more modern owner signature in pen on each volume's first fep. Some ghost imaging from steel plates but both volumes without foxing. Still attractive, durable and very readable. Worth a bit of spit and polish. Heavy and oversize so will require extra postage. NOT EX-LIBRARY. Bookseller Inventory # 849
