Description:

Oblong folio (15 1/2 x 11 1/2"). Unpaginated. [22] leaves. Original string-bound 3/4 burgundy moire over gilt-stamped marbled paper covered boards. Marbled endpapers. This splendid photo-album contains 53 silver gelatin prints documenting an unidentified French visitor's two year sojourn throughout French Indochina between 1935 and 1937. The size of the photographs varies, ranging from 4 1/4 x 3" to 8 1/2 x 6 1/4". They are mounted on 20 heavy cardstock leaves, including 11 with a large photograph mounted on each side. Each silver gelatin print is splendidly hand-captioned at lower margin, and is mounted within an Asian style hand-painted decorative frame. The album opens with photographs of Hanoi, starting with three large striking aerial views of the city (two general views - of which the first one has a printed caption dated Sept. 17, 1924 at lower right margin - and one of the Temple of Literature, which has a printed caption dated Sept. 18, 1925 at lower left margin), followed by a photograph of the One Pillar Pagoda, a Buddhist monk in full dress, two views of the French Governor-General Palace (now the Presidential Palace of Vietnam), a view of the Finot museum (now the National Museum of Vietnamese History), a pittoresque view of the rue des Paniers (now Hàng B street), a photograph of the funerals of the viceroy of Tonkin Hoàng Cao Kh i (printed caption dated Oct. 1, 1933 at lower right margin), and a view of the red Constellation of Literature pavilion. The next three photographs are an aerial view of Vietnam's highest mountain, the Fan Si Pan (with an undated printed caption at lower left margin), and two views of the Sa Pa Cat Cat cascade. Facing the three photographs is a large aerial view of the Bach Mai airfield. At verso is a photograph of the WWI Memorial monument of Hanoi, and an aerial view of four military French planes flying above Bach Mai. The next two photographs are large aerial views of the Tong airfield (the first view with printed caption at lower right margin dated Oct. 24, 1932, and May 9, 1933 for the second one). The following two large silver gelatin prints are an aerial view of Haiphong's harbor, and an aerial view of the city. Both photographs with undated printed captions at lower margin. A large aerial view of Cam Pha's coal mines. The next eight photographs are striking views of the magnificent Ha Long Bay (including 3 aerial views). A splendid large aerial view of the city of Tam Dao and its spectacular forest (now a National Park). The following two large pictures are an aerial view of Chapa (Sa Pa), and the Ba Be lake. They are followed by two other large aerial views of Tuyen Quang, and Lang Son. The next two large photographs are an aerial view of the Black River, and another of the Ham Rong bridge.
