Synopsis: This book traces the bold new art of costume developed after the 1917 Revolution through the inventive designs of artists such as Nadezhda Lamanova, Varvara Stepanova, Liubov Popoca, Alexandr Rodchenko and Vladimir Tatlin, whose revolutionary enthusiasm overcame civil war, shortages of raw materials and manpower. This book is beautifully illustrated with paintings, drawings, and photographs, many from previously unpublished collections and archives in the Soviet Union.
From Library Journal:
After the October 1917 Revolution, political idealism pervaded all aspects of Soviet life, including dress. In this fascinating major study, the late art historian Strizhenova chronologically traces the development of designs for fashions intended for the working masses. Homespun fabrics, vivid colors--especially red--Constructivist geometrics, folk design motifs, and simple, practical garment construction were to embody the spirit of the new Soviet state in everyday dress. This aesthetic is brilliantly depicted by 520 high-quality archival illustrations, many in color. Designers' sketches and model garments, propaganda post ers, scenes of holiday celebrations, paintings, theater and film costume design, and recent dress reconstructions will surprise most readers with their richness of color and design. Soviet sportswear of the Twenties and Thirties could be acceptably worn today. Unfortunately, little evidence exists that the clothes and fabrics were ever actually mass-produced for the use of the intended wearers. The "golden age" of Soviet fashion ended with the ravages of World War II. This handsome volume will be a worthwhile, albeit expensive, addition to costume history or Soviet studies collections.
