Book Description A. D. Donker, Johannesburg, 1979. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Photographs Peter Magubane (illustrator). First Thus. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. This book is signed - Best wishes, Jill Johnson on inner free end paper. There is a further inscription, on the first free end paper, - My Darling Ian, To mark the founding of Wellington Road - may it prosper! Annie 1979 There are sellotape marks to the first free end paper, also to the rear free end paper. Otherwise this book would be in Fine condition. This book speaks for itself, please pardon my awful pun. Unfortunately I have failed to find out anything more about or on Jill Johnson other than the potted biography of her on the dust jacket. Peter Magubane (born 1932) is a South African photographer. He was born in Vrededorp, now Pageview, a suburb in Johannesburg and grew up in Sophiatown. He started taking some photographs using a Kodak Brownie box camera as a schoolboy. In 1954 he read a copy of Drum, a magazine known for its reporting of urban blacks and the effects of apartheid. They were dealing with social issues that affected black people in South Africa. I wanted to be part of that magazine. He started at Drum as a driver. After six months of odd jobs, he was given a photography assignment under the mentorship of Jürgen Schadeberg, the chief photographer. He borrowed a camera and covered the 1955 ANC convention. I went back to the office with good results and never looked back. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 000478

Book Description A. D. Donker / Publisher, 1979. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition. 182 pages (complete). Signed by Jill Johnson on the first free page. A good copy of this wonderful book about one of the greatest cities in Africa photographed by the legendary Peter Magubane. The dustjacket has wear, creasing and scuffing. It is comfortable and secure. The boards are pleasing. There is but some wear to the corners and the head and foot of the spine. Within, the frontis and end papers have marks from scotch tape and handling. From thereon the pages are crowded with passion, lives. They are tidy, clean, clear, certain and pleasing. fk. Signed.
