About this Item

First edition. Full leather. viii, 200 pp. The History of the Reformation by Gilbert Burnet, was first undertaken as a rebuttal of a French work on the English Reformation that asserted it was a political act undertaken by a corrupt king (see Wikipedia). Wharton, perhaps as the result of personal animosities between himself and Burnet, wrote this work exposing errors in Burnet's work, which caused a further rift between Burnet and his allies and Wharton (Dictionary of National Biography). Henry Wharton was an English author and divine, preaching throughout the province of Canterbury with the permission of William Sancroft (Dictionary of National Biography). GOOD condition, ex-theological library. Binding repaired with brown cloth tape, bearing library marks and labels. Pastedown and minor library stamping in the interior. Leather scuffed, with minor staining and soiling. Heavy bumping and scuffing along the extremities. Binding cracked and separate along the front hinge, with the front cover detached from the text block but still intact otherwise. First endpaper DETACHED and laid in, with the top portion torn off. Rear interior hinge repaired with white cloth tape. Text block solid with minor scattered notations and marginal lines in pencil and ink throughout. ESTC R20365. Bookseller Inventory # 007515
