Description:

Elephant folio. Cover scuffed and loose. There are 120 plates executed in the last quarter of the eighteenth century by the antiquarian John Carter. Though the title page and frontpiece are spotted, almost all of the prints are in fair condition; there is spotting occasionally, but this mainly occurs outside the margin of the prints. But, also, the folio contains many stunning and clean hand-coloured engravings, including a superb rendition of the killing of Thomas Beckett and the subsequent penance of King Henry II. Signature of previous owner: Ralph Wornum (Keeper and Secretary of the National Gallery, London). Bookseller Inventory # 000119
