About this Item

39pp. An extensive speech on slavery in the United States, discussing the potential admission of New Mexico and California to the Union as free states, the troubles the fugitive slave act causes the northern states due to enforcement of it, both in detaining and question any African-Americans that enter northern ports and cities, as well as speculating on possible seccession. Webster also spends time discussing Texas and other lands, as well as other aspects of slavery, although never actually denouncing the practice. In FAIR condition. Both wraps DETACHED and held on by small circular metal clips (from previous owner). Moderate darkening, minor creasing and rubbing to the wraps. Minor dampstain to the rear wrap. A 2 by 1/2 inch rectangular piece of the front wrap at the upper corner, clipped out, with a small triangular piece missing from the lower corner. Many small chips and tears along the extremities of the rear wrap. Scattered minor pencil marginalia in the interior, with heavy offsetting on the title page corresponding with the piece missing from the front wrap. Bookseller Inventory # 003738
