About this Item

Delivered in the Senate of the United States, May 7th, 1860. Relations of States. On the Resolutions submitted by him on 1st of March, 1860. Baltimore: Printed by John Murphy & Co. Publishers, Booksellers, Printers & Stationers, Marble Building, 182 Baltimore Street, 1860. Tall octavo, printed self-wrappers. 15 pages. A 4" tear between front and back covers at the fold, slight wrinkling to covers, but still a very good copy of the First Edition. Sabin 18836 The resolutions introduced by Davis in March declare that each state has the right to decide whether or not slavery shall be legalized in that state, and that no other state, nor the federal government, shall have the right to interfere. The long tradition of holding slaves is the basis of Southern economy, and to disrupt it would be severely detrimental to that state's survival. This is one of the "rights" of states that the government must recognize in order to preserve "equality" among the states of the Union. Fort Sumter was fired upon 11 months later.
