About this Item

First edition. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR ON THE FRONT FLY, "PEACE IF POSSIBLE/ JUSTICE AT ANY RATE/ WENDELL PHILLIPS/ 1877". Original pebbled brown cloth, spine lettering gilt; 502 pps. Collection of utterances vocal and written by the man who came to be called "The Voice of The Abolitionist Movement". A native of Boston, Wendell Phillips (1811-1884) joined the anti-slavery cause in 1835 after attending a speech by William Lloyd Garrison (who was almost lynched as a result of delivering it), who later became a lifelong friend. His famous first public lecture, on the1837 murder of Rev. E.P. Lovejoy as a result of an anti-slavery position, appears as the first piece in this collection. During his long and distinguished career, Phillips also espoused women's sufferage, prison reform and Indian rights. This copy has wear at the spine ends and both hinges broken; the front endpaper has adhered to the front pastedown (making the inscription page the first leaf showing), with a bookplate on the verso of the front fly.
