About this Item

] Hardback, 12mo, black on red cloth, 314 pages, Perhaps Good/no dj. This copy INSCRIBED/SIGNED on front endpaper: "To Rolly Uxxxxx, the only pal I ever had - always wishing you happy landings, Frank Hawks, alias Hawker." Also laid-in: Christmas card in envelope (VG+/VG+) addressed to Mr. & Mrs. Rolf Uxxxxx of Minneapolis (Cancellation: Georgetown, Conn., April 8, 1936). The return address section reads: "Xmas Card! Is my face red! Frank Hawks." The card inside is printed one side (B&W), about the size of a post card, with a snowy picture of the "Hawks' Nest" - Redding, Conn. This card also features a warm caption and reproduced signatures of Hawks and his wife Edith. Fore-edges of FFEP and first blank page tattered and browned as they have peeled away from the cheesecloth at the gutter and have been protruding with the book closed. Frontis has a 2 inch corner missing at the top, including 1/2 to 1 inch of the photo (affecting tip of a propellor). Child's busy but rather light pencil has gone to work on front end-papers, including over the inscription, and on the recto of the frontis. Also light pencil in margins of three other pages and the last blank page. (A careful erasing project would remove most of the pencil.) Fore-edges partially water-stained + margin stains to a few early pages including frontis and corner stains to a few of the middle pages. One other tiny stain to one plate that bleeds through a few pages of text. Boards are bright and mostly clean (bumped corners), excepting for a few small stain spots near the top edge of the upper board. Spine is a bit sunned with some rubbing and a little fraying to the spine-ends. Twenty-one photographic plates (incl with Richard Byrd, in front of his record-breaker "Texaco No.13" and with his wife in front of the "Pride of San Diego" (the sister ship of Lindbergh's "Spirit of St. Louis"). A very unique copy of a scarce book, with a nice piece of related ephemera. RWR5 Aviation Air Speed Record Gliding Gliders Presentation Copy. Bookseller Inventory # 743
