In this volume the results of the project "Banquet and Grave," sponsored by the University of Vienna, are published objects found in the Middle East and Egypt. The theme was sponsored by the Austrian "Fonds zur FÃ rderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung" (FWF). The project itself deals with comparative studies of the main pictorial subjects of sepulchral art and the concepts portrayed therein in the Worlds of the Etrusco-Italians, the Greeks, and Asia Minor from the 8th through 3rd centuries BC. The monuments from the Middle East are the stelae and sculptures from the North-Syrian kingdoms (written by Ellen Rehm); the Egyptian objects come mostly from richly furnished graves (written by Christian Eder). About this title:

Synopsis: English summary: In this anthology, the results of the Austrian Foundation for the Promotion of Scholarly Research (osterreichischen Fonds zur Forderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung (FWF)) project "Banquet and Grave," which covers the region of the Near East and Egypt, are published by the University of Vienna. The project is concerned with comparative studies that all converge on a central theme of sepulchral art and their associated values in the Etrusco- Italian homeland of Greece and Asia Minor as well as the Levant and the Near East from the 8th to the 3rd century BCE. The essays on monuments in the Near East are concerned with stele and sculptures from the so-called North Syrian minor princes (edited by Ellen Rehm), and the section on Egyptian monuments is derived from different excavations and finds, chiefly in the context of grave finds (edited by Christian Eder).
