Synopsis: On Halloween night, Spooky, a black cat, rescues a ghost cat from a witch to whom he once belonged.
From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 2 The Bascomb girl sees a pretty white cat on the porch when she comes home one autumn evening, but when the girl tries to pet the cat, nothing is there. That night when the family is asleep, Spooky, their pet cat who once belonged to a witch, goes out to investigate and determines that the mysterious white cat has been put under a spell by his former owner. On the next night, Halloween, "the one night of the year when black cats have strange powers," Spooky uses those powers plus his own intelligence to foil the witch, release the white cat and gain a companion for himself as well as a second pet for the Bascombs. This is a satisfying, not-too-spooky story which should be an ideal Halloween read aloud both in homes and at story times. The language of the text evokes sound, mood and movement as do Glass' suggestive, textured illustrations. His use of color augments the color suggested by the text, nicely complementing it. Maria B.
