About this Item

Description:

Duodecimo,434 pp.Contemporary half morocco and marbled boards, some wear, bookplate, a pasted in photograph of the author, piece removed from title page but not affecting text. Horace William Wheelwright (1815-1865), writing under the nom de plume "An Old Bushman", was a qualified attorney who migrated from England to Australia in 1852. He came in search of gold, was unsuccessful, and decided to put his love of field sports into practice by becoming a professional shooter of game. He supplied the Melbourne market with duck, quail, pigeon and kangaroo before leaving for Europe in 1859. An account of his Scandavian experiences was published posthumously in 1866. He died in 1865 from injuries sustained from a fall in a London street. He is best known for 'Bush wanderings' first published in 1861. 'Sporting sketches" has a chapter on his Australian adventures.
