About this Item

xi, [1], 216 p., 23 cm. Occasional footnotes. Index. This is Studies in International Security Number 5. Leonard Beaton was a noted Canadian journalist who also was long associated with the International Institute for Strategic Studies [IISS] (London). This study was undertaken for the IISS consistent with its aims of fostering public discussion of defense and disarmament. The possibility, in the early 1960s, that there might be a steadily increasing number of countries that would come to develop nuclear weapons was a daunting prospect that helped propel the international community to support measures such as the Non-Proliferation Treaty. This study looks as the drivers for a decision either to pursue or forego nuclear weapons on the part of a number of countries and expressed the hope that its approach could be applied to other countries over time. Very good. No dust jacket. Cover has slilght scuffing, wear and soiling. Pencil erasure residue on fep. Presumed first U.S. edition/first printing. Bookseller Inventory # 66892
