About this Item

First American Edition. Folding Map of Central Africa in Color following Text. Pages 369 pp.8vo. Brown Publisher's Cloth with large Gilt Scenic Illustration on Cover and Gilt Titling. First American Edition. With Map, Thirty-three Portraits and Illustrations. In 1883, the explorations of Europeans to discover the routes of rivers and water movements in Central Africa were halted by rebellion in the Sudan and the inability of the Khedive to keep order. European military units were cut off in fierce and bloody engagements with the hordes of Arabs and Blacks constituting the troops of the Mahdi. Britain, after long procrastination was forced to act. Access to the southern routes was blocked, the Nile in the possession of the Mahdi, the Masai and Ugandans blocking the East and South. For the fifth time Britain called on Henry Stanley to the salvation of Central Africa and the rescue of the entrapped Europeans. This is the story of their rescue by Stanley and return to Zanzibar.
