About this title:

Synopsis: As the great-great-granddaughter of Sam Houston and Margaret Lea, Madge Thornall Roberts played in her great-grandparents home in Independence, Texas, which had Santa Anna s saddle in the upstairs hall, the San Jacinto sword over the mantle, and where she kept her doll s clothes in an old chest of Margaret Lea s. Trunks of documents sat unattended in the barn. Some of those papers later were burned, and what remained were divided among descendants. Madge Roberts has gathered these documents together again and, along with other Houston letters and interviews, woven them into the story of the Houstons marriage.
Much is known about Sam Houston s political and military career, but the influence of his wife and children on his life has been overlooked. The letters are astonishing in their emotional honesty, revealing a deep interdependency as well as a close and loving marital partnership."

About the Author: Madge Thornall Roberts, with degrees from Southwestern University and Trinity University, spent thirty-five years as a teacher. She is the editor of "The Personal Correspondence of Sam Houston."

Book Description University of North Texas Press. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Paperback. 448 pages. Dimensions: 8.9in. x 5.8in. x 1.2in.Much is known about Sam Houstons political and military career, but until Star of Destiny the influence of his wife and children on his life has been overlooked. Star of Destiny draws upon previously unpublished family letters between Sam and his wife Margaret Lea, which reveal a deep interdependency between the two. These letters are astonishing in their emotional honesty and they reveal aspects of married life in the nineteenth century that are overlooked by most historians. The letters, which have been unavailable to the public, counteract the myth of the lone hero who conquered the frontier without support or influence of his family. The author, great-great-granddaughter of Sam Houston and Margaret Lea, has gathered hundreds of letters from family members and interviewed descendants to tell the story of this remarkable marriage. This item ships from multiple locations. Your book may arrive from Roseburg,OR, La Vergne,TN. Paperback. Bookseller Inventory # 9781574411478
