About this title

Synopsis:

Cus Grissom was scheduled to be the first man on the moon, until a flash fire in the Apollo Command Module claimed his life and ended a brilliant career. That fire touched off a chain reaction of horror and guilt and a questioning of America's whole space program. In this compelling personal account, Betty Grissom and Henry Still chart the progress of the space program from a unique vantage point and take it from its first faltering steps to the successful Apollo moonshots, as seen through the eyes of those most intimately involved with it. Running parallel to this is Betty's progression from a small-town Indiana girl who married her high-school sweetheart to the plaintiff in a $10 million damage suit against North American Rockwell, builders of the Apollo spacecraft. The book describes the loneliness and acute shyness that often threatened to overwhelm Betty in the demanding role of wife to one of America's most prominent heroes - a man whose enormous work load and outside obligations precluded a normal home life and made telephone calls the most frequent method of communication between husband and wife. It describes the astronauts' triumphs and ordeals, the good times and practical jokes, the crises and setbacks. It provides an inside look at the tensions and frictions that plagued these men and their families and the strengths and courage that enabled them to overcome all obstacles. It brings back those days when all America was caught up in space fever and the intense competition to beat Russia to the moon. In particular, however, Starfall is the story of Gus Grissom's ceaseless quest for the stars and Betty's equally strong determination to hold their own private world together for him until his return.
