About this title

The author recounts the eleven years he spent working for the Stars and Stripes newspaper during World War II, the Nuremberg Trials, and the Berlin Air Lift

From Library Journal:

Zumwalt, who retired from the San Diego Union in 1979, recounts his 11 years with the European edition of The Stars and Stripes newspaper. This quasi-official publication has long served the U.S. military overseas. Zumwalt begins when he joined the paper in Paris in 1944 and concludes with his resignation as managing editor in Germany in 1955. Many artists and writers served the paper during the war and later, among them Bill Mauldin, Andy Rooney, and Grantland Rice. His descriptions of the day-to-day struggle to get the news to the front are interspersed with copy from the paper. The immediacy of some of these stories is almost eerie. Also mentioned are the attempts by some military brass at censorship and others to ensure a free press. The broad appeal should make this welcome in most collections.
