About this title

From School Library Journal:

Grade 4-6-- While this comes up short as a true beginner's how-to guide, it's quite successful as a source of inspiration and supplemental information. Basics on scales, manufacturers, building layouts, scenery, track plans, accessories , and equipment are presented, but there simply isn't enough detailed guidance for those getting started. An outstanding feature is the presentation of related data: directories of exhibits, publications and manufacturers, museums, tourist railroads, and model train clubs and shows. Unfortunately, the black-and-white photos do not do justice to the colorful topic. For those who want real guidance in assembling a model railroad, stick with The ABC's of Model Railroading (1978) or Jim Kelly's Fun with Electric Trains (1990, both Kambach), both of which give detailed instructions but require adult-level reading and building abilities. --Jeffrey A.
