About this Item

"241 Pages. The coup d?etat is a political expedient as opposed to a revolution or insurrection. Coups come in all sorts of forms. There are military coups and palace coups; political and non-political coups; indigenous coups and externally supported coups; bloody coups and bloodless coups; failed coups and successful coups. Using a broad historical range of case studies, Eric Carlton tackles several questions: Why do coups occur? What are the preconditions, and in what circumstances is a coup likely to take place? Who are the participants? How is the coup planned and executed? What are the consequences? How are coups legitimized and consolidated? Contents: Introduction; Theories of Coup d?Etat; The Coup d?Etat and the failure of Idealism: the case of Haremheb; The Coup d?Etat and Political Reform: oligarchy in Classical Athens; Coup d?Etat and Political Stabilization: proscription in Republican Rome; Coup d?Etat and Self-Preservation: the pre-emptive strike in Late Republican Rome; Coup d?Etat and the Seizure of Power: political murder in imperial Rome; The Coup d?Etat and Dynastic Change: succession and the Wars of the Roses; The Coup d?Etat and the Political Foil: the case of Lady Jane Grey; Coup d?Etat as a perennial Hazard: the Japanese experience; Coup d?Etat as Subterfuge: ?The Night of the Long Knives?; Coup d?Etat and Political Revenge: Paul of Yugoslavia; Coup d?Etat and the Presumption of Power: the case of Admiral Darlan; Coup d?Etat and Military Expediency: Colonel Nasser and the ?New Order? in Egypt; Coup d?Etat and Political Emancipation: Post-war problems in West Africa; Coup d?Etat and Religious Revival: the Shah and Islamic fundamentalism in Iran; Coup d?Etat and despotism: the Trujillo era; Excursus: The Coup and Organized Crime in the USA; Bibliography; Index." About this title

Synopsis:

This book is a historical and comparative study of the politics and practice of the coup d'etat. But, having said this, it is not primarily concerned with the logistics of the coup, including such essentials as strategy, timing, and the composition of the conspiratorial group. Instead, it concentrates more on the various types of coup, and the motivations of those who plot to overthrow governments - often by violent means. Not least of all, it looks at the social repercussions of coups, and at the conditions which make for their success or failure.
It seeks also to differentiate the coup from the revolt/rebellion which, when successful, we normally term a revolution. These usually originate within the wider society, possibly with outside help in terms of men and material. Coups, by contrast, are acts which derive from within the system. In effect, they are the system turning on itself.
This book will be of interest to students of politics, history and the social sciences.

About the Author:

Eric Carlton is now a Research Fellow in the Department of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Durham.
