About this Item

BURGOYNE, John. A State of the Expedition from Canada, as Laid Before the House of Commons, By Lieutenant-General Burgoyne, and Verified by Evidence; with a Collection of Evidence. London, 1780. Second edition. ix, [2], 191, [1], cix pp. plus six of folding maps (some with original coloring of troop movements] and one folding table. Modern three quarter calf and marbled boards, leather label, raised bands. leaves tanned, some scattered foxing. Expert paper repairs along folds of some of the maps. Overall just about very good. Howes B-968. Sabin 9255. Burgoyne's defense of his conduct as the commander of the British expedition down the Hudson Valley from Canada in 1777. Intended to cut the New England colonies off from the rest of rebellious America, the expedition ended in disaster at Saratoga, where American forces soundly defeated Burgoyne and forced his capitulation. Herein Burgoyne responds to the inquiry of the House of Commons, demonstrating that the forces he was given were not sufficient to perform the task. This is the most important source for the campaign, illustrated with excellent maps, mostly depicting the Saratoga battle. Bookseller Inventory # 38199
