16mo. pp. 2 p.l., 120. modern half calf (title browned, some foxing throughout, repair to outer blank margin of 1 leaf). Second Edition. The sketches are dated Goderich, March 1832. "Neither statistical nor truthful, it was designed to attract the "better" class of settlers. Dunlop included ironic comments on the delights of Canadian cookery and was unable to refrain from witty and sarcastic remarks on the internal divisions among Presbyterian bodies and on the connection between Methodists and politics." (Story) William Tiger Dunlop, who had previously been posted to Upper Canada in 1813 as acting surgeon of the 89th Regiment, returned in 1826 with John Galt, in the service of the Canada Company, settling just north of Goderich. In 1829 he became inspector of the company s lands and settlements, and in 1833, general superintendent. Becoming increasingly critical of the company, he finally resigned in 1838. From 1841 to 1845, he sat for Huron in the Legislative Assembly, and thereafter he was superintendent of the Lachine Canal.
