About this title

A disastrous harvest forces Stefan to sell his beloved pet goose Olga, but a practical application of his musical talent saves the day

From School Library Journal:

Grade 2-4-- Stefan is a poor peasant whose only friend is his pet goose, Olga. She helps him through his long day's work, and then dances for him as he plays his flute during the peaceful evenings they love to share. After a disastrous harvest, the man is left in dire straits. He must sell everything, even his beloved Olga, for he can no longer feed her. He believes he has found a safe home for her, until he learns that her new master sees her as merely "this succulent goose." Stefan, in despair, is determined to win her back, and he does so in a flurry of farmyard slapstick. A warmhearted story with a most satisfying conclusion sees the friends reunited. Vivid watercolors convey both the serenity of the placid countryside and riotous scenes of animal anarchy. --Joan McGrath, Education Centre Library, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
