About this Item

Grey boards with black lettering. Glossy, color-illus. dj with blue/black lettering on spine. 367 pp. with 437 color plates and additional figures. Text in Italian but for one essay/section in English (Allan Marquand and the Study of the Della Robbia in America, by Marietta Cambareri). The literature on the Della Robbia glazed sculpture is vast, but little has been written on that part of their production that covers the crests. Allan Marquand, one of the greatest scholars of the Della Robbia pottery, studied and cataloged these works for the first and only time in 1919. After almost a century, this book presents a catalog reorganized and updated, with particular regard to the attribution of individual objects to each of the members of the large Della Robbia family. The sculptures are then examined from the point of view of arms, according to the laws and established the terminology of a science that requires the specific analysis of enamel, partitions and figures in their position, number and attributes. The introductory essays also allow you to insert the arms in a very specific historical context. Each crest fully annotated and pictured in color. With a history of the various names/people of the Della Robbia family, a heraldic glossary, chronological bibliography, and index of names. VG/VG Clean, tight, and apparently unread but with bumps to corners of both book and dj and a faint wrinkle to top right corner of each page. Bookseller Inventory # 148418

About this title

Synopsis:

The bibliography on Della Robbia’s glazed sculpture is vast, but little has been written on the part of their production regarding heraldic arms. Allan Marquand, one of the greatest scholars of Della Robbia’s majolicas, studied and cataloged these works for the first and only time in 1919. After almost a century, this volume presents a reorganized and updated catalog, with particular attention to the attribution of individual artifacts to each member of the numerous Della Robbia family. The sculptures are then examined from a heraldic point of view, according to established laws and to the punctual terminology of a science that requires specific analysis of glazes, partitions and figures in their position, number and attributes. Introductory essays insert the arms in a very specific historical context. Essays by Marietta Cambareri (in English), Renzo Dionigi, Andrea Guerrieri, Claudia Storti, Carlo Tibaldeschi. Introduction by Giancarlo Gentilini (in Italian, with English abstracts).
