First Edition. No DJ. Previous owner bookplate on inside front cover. Previous owner was Richard E. Guggenhime, a Bay area attorney, a Stanford Trustee, 1958-1978 and a recipient of the Herbert Hoover Medal for distinguished service. His name is also inked on the front free page. Below his signature it is dated 8 July 1932. Below the date is I think who Richard Guggenhim presented this copy to: Thomas S. Barclay, professor of political science at Stanford from 1928 to 1957. Couple of pages with staining to bottom page edges. Spine sunned. Some soiling to covers. Stephen Johnson Field (November 4, 1816- April 9, 1899) was an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court from May 20, 1863, to December 1, 1897. Prior to this, he was the 5th Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court. Abraham Lincoln appointed him to the newly created 10th Supreme Court. Bookseller Inventory # 3002402
