Dark navy cloth and gray ribbed paper over boards. x, 405 p. 23 cm. B&W Plates, Portraits. Autobiography of prolific 19th-20th century American author Laura E. Richards, b.1850, daughter of Samuel Gridley and Julia Ward Howe. Her reformer father was a founder and director of the Perkins Institution and Massachusetts School for the Blind, and her literary mother was a poet. Hers was a large family of diverse interests, books, art, travel, education, and various Boston area. homes. She wed an architect in 1871, Henry Richards. By 1876, they would settle in Gardiner, Maine, helping with the family paper mill. Theirs was a life of raising children, making their way, and her expanding and respected writing career. Through these entertaining pages, one learns of ancestral tales and personalities, city and country and seashore life. Very good. No dust jacket. Sturdy, well-bound.
