About this Item

Dimensions 9 x 6 inches. Black and brown ink, vignette of a woman sitting next to a shield with a steamboat on one side and a locomotive on the other, small vignette on left side of woman sitting next to a cog, decorative border. Foxing, fold lines, left upper corner missing, two peach colored spots, possibly adhesive residue? No. 144, originally issued to William H. Cary on May 6th, 1836. The New York, Providence and Boston Railroad, AKA "The Stonington Line" was chartered in 1832 and opened in 1837. It enabled people to travel from New York City to Boston without navigating through the rough waters of Point Judith, Rhode Island. Instead, people could take a steamboat over Long Island Sound to Stonington, Connecticut, and take this railroad to Providence, Rhode Island, and transfer to the Boston and Providence Railroad. The New York, Providence and Boston was acquired by the J. P. Morgan's New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad in 1893. It is now part of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. Bookseller Inventory # 015912
