About this title

From School Library Journal:

Grade 3-4-- When the Southside Sluggers begin losing games, some of the players conclude that the other teams' batters must somehow know which signals are being exchanged between their pitcher, Zach, and catcher, Andy, thereby anticipating every pitch. It's known as ``sign stealing,'' and Zach, Andy, Seth, and Rachel set out to find out who is responsible. The mystery develops through the teammates' investigations, as they find suspects (a man with a zoom-lens camera, a girl with binoculars, a disgruntled Slugger) and then narrow their choices. Although Adler's ``Cam Jansen'' (Viking) and Cameron's ``Julian'' (Random) books are considerably shorter, their characters are more fully developed than those found here. There's little suspense to engage readers, and while there is plenty of dialogue and the writing is clear, the plot moves forward mechanically. Uninspired. --Denise Krell, New York Public Library-
