About the Author: Nationally known as a writer, journalist, and researcher, David Hellerstein, MD is Director of Medical Communications at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, and an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. A fourth generation doctor, he received his MD at Stanford after completing undergraduate studies at Harvard, then trained in psychiatry at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. He practices, does research, and writes in New York. Dr. Hellerstein's previous books include a collection of award-winning essays about medical training, Battles of Life and Death; a novel, Loving Touches; and a memoir, A Family of Doctors. His articles, essays, and short fiction have been published in magazines including Harper's, Esquire, North American Review, Fiction, Yankee, and the New York Times Magazine. He was awarded the Pushcart Prize for best essay (A Death in the Glitter Palace); included in Battles of Life and Death) and has also been awarded MacDowell Colony fellowships.
