About this Item

Although the copyright page says 1867, and the title page says 1868, Peter Parley to Penrod says the copyright was actually received by the Library of Congress on January 3, 1868. 292pp. plus 7pp. ads. With many wood-engraved illustrations. Purple publisher's cloth, with gorilla illustrated in gilt. Slight lean to spine and rubbing to extremities, else fine. The first European to see gorillas, and to identify several other species, du Chaillu traveled extensively in sub-Saharan Africa and told sensational stories of his adventures. The rumors that he himself was a "mulatto" might explain his expressions of contempt and ridicule for the African "cannibals" and "savages." He provides an account of the slave "barracoons" during the last years of the slave trade. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 007106
