About this Item

Red ribbed cloth over boards; gold spine titles; blind-stamped front titles. v p., 2 l., 176 p. 20 cm. B&W photo plates. Biography of 30-year headmaster at the Oundle School in England, founded in 1485, and supported by the London Grocers Company beginning in 1556. F.W. Sanderson knew H.G. Wells for 8 years beginning in 1914 when the Wells boys enrolled in the school, until the schoolmaster's death. Sanderson had been brought aboard to modernize the school's educational policies. Wells describes the energizing and varied intellectual influences of Sanderson's formative and professional era, from Darwinism to world-changing inventions to The Great War (WWI). In a short preface, Wells notes he had rarely been so moved to write a biography. Very good. No dust jacket. Slight corner and spine end wear. Minor top and right page block soiling. Clean interior. First edition. Date on both title and copyright pages. Bookseller Inventory # Alibris.B4560004609

Store Description

Hi, Folks ... Mom said, 'I need to downsize'. Moving to assisted living, what she couldn't take included 8,000-plus books & records. A decade later, my upcountry barn is bursting. Books multiply as others recycle priorities. I now have 30,000 or more books (not yet all online) looking for good homes, and my learning curve has been a roller coaster. I celebrate word-crafters, thought-tumblers, laughter ... the arts of communication at every turn. I preserve, protect, and share. I am also Hedgehog Publishing, 'Words & Pictures by & for Folks with Prickly Backs, Soft Bellies, & Small Brains'.
