About this Item

An Account of Paper-Making from Its Earliest Known Record Down to the Present Time. J. W. Butler Paper Company: Chicago, 1901. Small octavo, cloth. 136 pages, illustrated. Inscribed and signed by J. W. Butler. A very good copy. A general history of papermaking for the layman, produced by the Butler Paper Company as something they thought fitting for them to do on the closing year of the century in which they were founded. Butler would eventually become one of the largest paper distributors and manufacturers in the world. Seven chapters in all, including "Articles Supplanted by Paper," "Papyrus and Parchment," "Origin and Early History of Paper," "Early Methods of Papermaking," "Water-Marks and Varieties of Paper," and "Extent of the Business in the United States." It would be interesting to know who wrote this interesting work, produced at a time when few works on this subject were even available for the layman. Bookseller Inventory # 5202
