About this Item

Small 4to. Grey cloth. 633pp. Frontispiece, illustrations, map endpapers. Very good. Ownership name/address lightly, neatly inkstamped on blank rear flyleaf. Tight, attractive reprint edition of this 1938 study bearing a choice autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Henry, 1p, 8½" X 11", Washington, DC, 1953 October 20. Addressed to radio pioneer, noted Civil War collector and Broadcast Music Inc. president Carl Haverlin. Near fine. On letterhead of the "Association of American Railroads," which Henry served as vice president, he notes: "I enclose the post card saying that 'I should like to be present' to help do honor to Mr. Meserve but that I shall not be able to be there because of an engagement in Texas at that time. With best wishes for what I know will be an auspicious occasion and high regards for the scholar in whose honor it is to be held." Large, bold signature. Frederick Hill Meserve (1865-1962), "America's first great photograph collector" who rescued Lincoln images that otherwise would have been lost forever. Just a reprint edition, but quite handsome and with a fine content author letter. Bookseller Inventory # 21511
