About this Item

9 sheets folded in half to make 18 pages. Evidence of stapling at one time, but no staples now. Tape on spine and back cover. Some brown spots on cover and first few pages, possibly grease spot that soaked through. Promotional booklet for "Shaker Extract of Roots" and "Shaker Family Pill". There are some small articles about the Shaker community, tables of the moon's phases in 1882 and cooking recipes. However, this booklet is mostly testimonials about the miraculous healing powers of the "Shaker Extract of Roots". In 1875, Andrew Judson White entered into an agreement with the Mount Lebanon (New York) United Society of Believers (Shaker) Community to manufacture a medicinal tonic according to his (White's) formula. Mr. White changed the name of his medicine from "Mother Seigel's Syrup" to "Shaker Extract of Roots" in order to capitalize on the Shaker's reputation for medicinal herbs. The business venture was very successful, although the tonic was mostly a glorified laxative. Bookseller Inventory # 015716
