The Dutch author has won numerous literary awards and has been mentioned as a candidate for the Nobel Prize in literature. Nooteboom was born in The Hague. His first novel, Philip and the Others, was published in 1955 and won the Anne Frank Prize. His second novel, The Knight Has Died, published in 1963. 17 years later, in 1980, he published Rituals, which brought him wide acclaim in Holland and won the Pegasus Prize. It was also his first book translated into English. THE FOLLOWING STORY is his best-known work to English-speaking audiences and it won the Aristeion Prize in 1993.
