About this Item

8vo. Original blind-embossed burgundy cloth, with elaborate decorative giltstamping on spine. 700pp. Frontispiece, illustrations (some color), decorative endpapers. Good plus. Some edgewear; small chipping at head and tail of spine; delicate front inner hinge expertly, archivally strengthened. Later printing of this 1887 autobiography, a tight and decent copy of what John T. Hubbell calls "Well-known, valuable reminiscences; especially good for accounts of military hospitals and relief work." The seven color lithograph "Famous Union Battle-Flags" plates and single "Confederate Battle-Flags" plate are stunning. A decent copy of a title that never seems to wear well and due to acidic stock usually shows rough preliminary leaves. NEVINS II, 130. EICHER 637. Bookseller Inventory # 33456
