About this title

Synopsis:

This is a "how to" book written by a "know how" person for anyone who practices firefighting strategy. Deputy Chief Vincent Dunn is passing on to the next generation of firefighters the lessons ("strategy summaries") he learned from his years of firefighting experience. He describes firefighting strategies for the most common types of fire scenarios and identifies specific firefighting problems presented to an incident commander by occupancy and construction type. More importantly, he explains firefighting solutions and offers firefighting plans, standard procedures, action plans, ideas, guidelines, explanations, key steps, and systems of firefighting procedures. This book is not about tactics. It's about strategy - plans of firefighting, logical ways to solve problems at fires.

About the Author:

Deputy Chief Vincent Dunn (retired) is a 42-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).  He is a recognized authority on firefighting and the recipient of many awards acknowledging his achievements--"Man of the Year" (1990) by the Society of Fire Protection Engineers; the Edward W. Whalen Award (l995) by the New York City, Fire Safety Director's Association; a Lifetime Achievement Award (1999) by Fire Engineering Magazine; and the Lifetime Achievement Award (2000) by the New York City Fire Department.  Deputy Chief Dunn is the author of a number of textbooks--Collapse of Burning Buildings (Fire Engineering, 1988), Safety and Survival on the Fireground (Fire Engineering, 1992), and Command and Control of Fires and Emergencies (Fire Engineering, 1999)--and is a contributing editor with Firehouse Magazine. He has developed and taught numerous courses for the FDNY, the FBI and the National Fire Academy, and has served as an adjunct professor at Manhattan College. Dunn currently teaches at John Jay College, City University of New York. He has a master's degree in urban studies, a bachelor's degree in sociology and an associate's degree in fire administration from Queens College, City University of New York.
