Early printing, but not a first. Pictorial cloth in unclipped jacket. 436 pp. A fictional but realistic portrayal of life in Harlem, drawing on the author's experiences working in the neighborhood. Ann Petry was an African-American author, publishing several novels and short stories. This work won the Literary Fellowship Prize from Houghton Mifflin. FAIR/GOOD jacket on a VERY GOOD book. General fading, with minor uneven browning to the jacket, mostly to the rear cover. Minor soiling, with a few minor stains present. Heavy chipping and tearing along the extremities, mostly along the top rear. This includes minor loss of jacket and associated creasing. Some fading to the book, mostly to the extremities and spine.
