Synopsis: NOW SOLD WITH 70-MINUTE VIDEO! The exercises in this easy-to-follow, spiral-bound book and video work through the use of the "Stretchcloth," a unique exercise aid devised by the author consisting of a lengthy band of slightly stretchy material.
The twenty-seven exercises deepen stretches and ease you through areas of joint restriction, releasing tension and increasing your flexibility. They also help to isolate and strengthen muscles in the abdomen, back, and ribcage for proper weight support, removing strain and promoting a healthy back.
By varying the length of the cloth and using more, or less, pressure, the exercises can be done as gently or intensely as desired. The book opens flat for easy viewing and each exercise has short, concise instructions accompanied by large photographs.
About the Author: Lilian Jarvis was a principal dancer and charter member of the National Ballet of Canada ('51-'63). Subsequent study of the Martha Graham modern dance technique revealed to her the importance of "connecting" with the "inner body" to improve one's physical condition, whether one's lifestyle be highly active or sedentary.
Her technique, Somatic Stretch (formerly BioSomatics Deep Stretch), is based on the principles of tension release, flexibility, internal strengthening, and postural alignment and reflects the conscious awareness that underlies the Graham approach. The Stretchcloth is an adjunct to her technique and an invaluable aid in achieving its goals.
With a father who was one of Toronto's first masseurs and her late brother an osteopath, Lilian comes from a family with interests in various aspects of the healing therapies. Her daughter is a shiatsu and acupuncture therapist and an instructor of Somatic Stretch as well as creator of Neural Resonance Therapy, a specialized training for all hands-on practitioners. And Lilian's son is a medical doctor branching out into alternative therapies.
Lilian has taught her technique in Toronto, Canada, since 1978 while her daughter has taken it to California, England and Australia. With her lifelong involvement in training and her continuing pursuit of physical excellence, Lilian is highly attuned to the workings of the body and exceptionally well qualified as a somatic educator.
