Synopsis: Each book explores styles and techniques that were invented or refined by players on a particular instrument.
From School Library Journal:
Gr 7 Up--Gourse weaves together sketches of 23 American jazz piano greats, such as Jelly Roll Morton, Eubie Blake, Mary Lou Williams, Thelonius Monk, Bud Powell, and Bill Evans. The author has grouped these performers into broad categories such as swing, bebop, Miles Davis's groups, and the avant-garde. A highly pictorial 16-page center section entitled "The Piano Tree" provides a time line of events and personalities related to jazz piano music. The book contains some lively writing, accurate information, and carefully footnoted dialogue, but the main value of Gourse's overview is the biographical information it provides. Black-and-white archival photos appear throughout. Libraries should rely on James Haskins's Black Music In America (HarperCollins, 1987) for a thorough historical analysis.
