About this Item

Illustrations by author. Small 4to. Grey cloth with blue lettering and decorations, pictorial dust jacket. (Ca. 100pp). Numerous illustrations, pictorial endpapers. Near fine/very good. Jacket a tad rubbed and edgeworn, with spine a bit sunned. Tight, quite attractive third printing of the second book that this noted author/illustrator (1892-1957) both wrote and illustrated, first published in 1940. An absolutely charming, autobiographical "story of my mother and my father and of their fathers and mothers." Lower left corner of front jacket panel displays circular gold foil "The Caldecott Medal" sticker, which this title won for "The Most Distinguished American Picture Book for Children." Nevertheless, a 1968 revised edition altered two questionable references: Native Americans referred to as "tame" (removed) and reference to a "colored boy" (changed to "Negro slave"). Lovely copy of a title difficult to find WITH jacket and WITHOUT ex-library markings. Bookseller Inventory # 41087
