In Hebrew with and English language summary from the rear. A thesis submitted to the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy July 3rd, 1940. Dr. Lipman was Professor of Plant Physiology. When he first came to the University of California in 1909, he formed a close association in his scientific researches with the distinguished investigators, Hilgard, Loeb, and Osterhout, and his early work was greatly influenced by them. He started at that time some of the pioneer studies on the antagonistic effects of salts on the growth of microorganisms and also established systematic research on the bacteria of arid and semiarid soils, a subject to which but little previous a.
