About this Item

First Edition, xx, [1], 325pp with 335 textual illustrations, royal octavo, a very fine copy in original cloth, almost without blemish, Edinburgh & London: Young J. Pentland, 1902. * FURTHER PHOTOGRAPHS ON REQUEST.* Garrison-Morton 2812. "Mackenzie became interested in cardiac arrhythmias early in his career and developed the well-known Mackenzie Ink Polygraph to assist him with his studies. This work was the first scientific treatise on irregularities of the pulse and established Mackenzie's reputation as one of the leading heart specialists of the day. He describes and depicts his clinical polygraph, fully explores the nature of the pulse and concentrates on the clinical significance of the pulse in diagnosing irregularities of the heart" (Heirs of Hippocrates 2149). * Sir James Mackenzie FRS (1853 -1925) Scottish cardiologist, pioneer in the study of cardiac arrhythmias. He qualified as a doctor in 1878 from Edinburgh. In his early studies Mackenzie used Riva-Rocci's sphygmograph to graphically record the pulse. Later Mackenzie devised a "polygraph," that allowed him to make simultaneous records of the arterial and venous pulses. He used this to evaluate the condition of the heart and to measure the AV interval. In 1890 he discovered premature ventricular contractions and use of the polygraph enabled Mackenzie to make original distinctions between harmless and dangerous types of pulse irregularities (arrhythmias). Mackenzie also demonstrated the efficacy of Digitalis in the treatment of arrhythmias and made important contributions to the study of the energetics of the heart muscle. In 1915 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and was knighted. - Wikipedia. Bookseller Inventory # 23139
