Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co., London, 1922, first edition; large 4to, 270 x 390mm, pp xvi, 381, ; illustrated with over 270 prtins from the author's collection, 22 of these shown in colour; linen spine with black leather label gilt, blue paper boards with an embossed crysanthemum motif; binding rather worn, particularly along the edges, some browining or light foxing of the prelims and back end papers and occasionally elsewhere but internally firm, clean and in very good condition. Stewart critical opinions would be challenged by some today but the books is a very valuable account of a large number of Japanese prints and their artists. The focus on theatre is perhaps especially important given the connection with Japanese society of the time and its use as a means of political comment or subtle protest, an approach echoed very often in prints also. There are useful addenda, specifically several pages listing ukiyo-e artists, list of signatures and of publishers' seals, actors' crests, a comprehensive index, a useful section on dating Japanese prints, a table of numerals and another of zodiacal signs. NOTE that as the book weighs approaching 3.5kg a postage supplement on the standard rates will apply to all sales, the exact amount depending on location and form of carriage.
