About this Item
Offering a suffrage postcard postmarked Atlantic City, NJ, dated Sept. 10, 1916, written by A.E. JACKSON during the National Woman Suffrage Association, held in Atlantic City. Addressed to Miss Martha Edgar, Greensboro, MD, Carolina Co. Jackson writes, I have been enjoying the suffragette meeting so much. Heard Mr. Wilson saw Mrs. Wilson. Have seen several Aeroplane flights wish you could be here. In 1916, the National Woman Suffrage Association held a convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey, from September 6th to the 10th. Carrie Chapman Catt, the association president, unveiled her winning plan at the convention. The convention was strategically moved to September to allow for preparation before the presidential election in November, and both presidential candidates were invited to speak. President Wilson, who was running for re-election, delivered a speech at the convention. He assured the women s suffrage association that they would one day prevail in their struggle to attain the right to vote. Women in the United States would not acquire the right to vote until 1920 when the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. Wilson s position on suffrage was less than supportive. He once told a group of women protesting at the White House that he thought suffrage should be left up to the states to decide. When World War I broke out on April 6, 1917, government officials promoted national unity and identified possible agitators and accused them of undermining the American war effort. Some of the women leaders were accused of being anarchists and pro-German. The women s movement insisted that their focus was on equal suffrage. The front of the postcard, in color, features Rolling Chairs on Board Walk, Atlantic City, NJ, with small groups of women riding in the cards. Jackson briefly mentions seeing several airplane flights. While experimenting with airplanes began in the late 19th century, by 1916, the date of this postcard, airplanes were still in their early stages of development. The postcard is in excellent condition with a bold postmark, designating it as undeniably dated during the convention. Light toning. Postage still intact.
